Denim is a big business. From cowboys to the catwalk, this trend encompasses a huge mass and is not going anywhere. So it’s noteworthy when a particular pair takes the fashion world by storm the way J Brand Houlihan Cargos (see our review) did in Spring of 2010. I personally was smitten by the cut and bought them in several different washes. This pair that I’m reviewing today takes me back to that time, as they remind me a lot of the Houlihan Cargos. These are J Brand Brix Cargo Jeans.
I admit that when I first saw them in J Brand’s lookbook, it didn’t particularly catch my attention since they reminded me so much of the ever beloved Houlihan Cargo. In my mind, I figured why buy another pair of similar cargos? Then I spotted Christina Applegate in them and drooled at the site of them. So I decided to give them a go and see how they compared. Oh my, I love these cargos!
First off, the fit is similar to the Houlihans. They’re tight fitting and extremely flattering in their cut. They’re tight on the waist and fitted along the thighs and calves. The cargo pockets are placed perfectly, keeping a slim fit to the pants without any bulkiness. The inseam on these, however, is a bit longer. They have a 29 ½ inch inseam. They fit just below my ankle, so I like keeping the bottom side zipper opened slightly as the hem sits along my shoe. The bottom outer side hem has a 9 ½ inch long zipper opening with a 10 inch leg opening when zipper is closed. The rise is 7 ½ inches.
An added bonus to these killer cargos is the zippers along the front. They’re a vintage rose colored metal and contrast perfectly against the color of the wash which is called Vintage Evergreen. The color is a dark forest green with a bit of fading for a slight vintage appeal. The rear has slit pocket that I’m typically not a fan of, but it’s something I am willing to overlook since the rest of these pants are so great. They’re made of 98% cotton and 2% elastane, and they have a lot of stretch to the material. The elasticity in the material allows them to really cling to every part of the leg, making these an extra skinny fit. These run slightly small, so I’d suggest going up in size if you’re in between sizes. Otherwise, just go with your normal J Brand size.
Washing instruction are: Wash in cold water with like colors, do not bleach, tumble dry low, remove promptly, warm iron if necessary.
These have been seen on Christina Applegate.
