J Brand Bette Jeans in Wonderama

It may seem by now that I’m partial to skinny jeans, but I’m actually a big fan of the wideleg jean as well.  So I was really looking forward to this trend returning as it has this season.  And there are so many cute styles to choose from.  These are J Brand’s Bette jeans, which I’d been eyeing from J Brand’s pre-season  previews.  So I was so ecstatic when they were released this season.

These are a true remake of a 70’s retro style jean.  They have a very high waist (10 inch rise), which I’m typically not a fan of.  But it works for these jeans somehow.  It’s flattering because the top part of the jeans almost fits like a girdle, making the stomach feel flatter.  No one likes to hear the word, “girdle,” but J Brand managed to take something dreadful and turn it into something fabulous.  That being said, because of the higher rise, they aren’t super flattering on the rear.  I think it’s very difficult for high rise jeans to be flattering on the rear, and the same applies to these jeans unfortunately.

The front and back have square patch pockets, which I love.  It’s such a cute little detail that sets them apart from J Brand’s other usual classic 5 pocket styles.  And the pockets have a yellow contrast stitching, allowing the pockets to stand out more.  These jeans run very long with a 35 inch inseam.  So unless you are blessed with really long legs, these will need to be tailored.  While this look might not be for everyone, it can make you look taller.  They really lengthen the look of the legs, which I also love.  They’re a wideleg jean with a 23 inch leg opening, and a 15 inch break at the knee.  They also have a 1 ½ inch hem at the bottom which accentuates the wide width at the bottom.

The wash is called Wonderama, which is a medium wash with slight fading along the thighs.  It’s nice that the wash isn’t too dramatic as to take away from the many cute little details on these jeans.  The material is made of 97% cotton, 7% polyester, and 1% spandex.  These jeans have a lot of stretch, so I’d suggest going down a size.  They do run a bit large.  Wash instructions are:  wash in cold with like colors, tumble dry low.

One of the things I love about these jeans is how versatile they are.  Because of their style, they can easily be dressed up given the right top and shoes. But they can also be worn casually with a peasant blouse or flowing top, giving a more bohemian look.  I am a big fan of bohemian styles, which is one of the reasons I love these jeans.  And then these jeans can also be worn with a more classic look, with a sweater or basic top.  Any way you choose to wear these, the look is fabulous because these jeans are amazing!

These jeans have been seen on AnaLynne McCord, Alessandra Ambrosio, January Jones, and Cheryl Cole.

Being on the shorter side i often wonder if the wideleg jeans would make me look too… stumpy… i suppose with each body type it would be different even for a shorter person but it was a thought. anyhow with this thought in mind i’ve never ventured to purchase and wideleg jeans… what are your thoughts?

Thanks for your comment, epark. I agree that the wideleg jean isn’t for everyone. If you’re more petite in stature, I would recommend wearing wideleg jeans with higher shoes, like platforms or wedges to give some length to the legs. Also, I’d recommend a wideleg with a lower rise. I hope this helps! 🙂

  3. […] My favorite part of these jeans is the patchwork details.  The front thighs have mismatched colored denim patches.  The front and rear pockets are all patch pockets placed along a high waist (rise is 9 ½  inches).  The style of these jeans reminds me a bit of J Brand Bette Wide Leg Jean (in Wonderama Wash), which we did a review on in the past (see review HERE).
